What are the tells that a driver shaft flex is too weak?
« on: July 13, 2010, 05:06:34 am »
I've always heard that a hook is the sign that your club shafts might be too soft, but are there any other indicators?  I've noticed that this year, I seem to be hitting my driver (R7 425) nearly 10 more yards, but I'm also losing the ball to the right (blocking) more often.  I play the stock REAX shaft, regular flex, but a few people are telling me that I should consider moving to a stiff.  I'm not convinced, especially as I feel it's more of a tempo thing, but the block right has been my nemesis since I bought the club 3 years ago.

Thanks

Well this is a good topic for me.

I just purchased an 07 Burner head with a stock Reax shaft (stiff).

My swing speed is between 94 and 102 MPH, ball speed around 150 mph.  I have a time trying to get this ball to go straight or even with a little draw.  What I have found is that I need to concentrate harder on squaring up the head and have started to have some success in doing this with a feeling of rolling my hands over thru the hitting area.

Prior to this I had a Graffaloy Pro Launch Red in the club and really liked the trajectory and distance I was getting from the club.   I have seriously considered changing to this shaft in my Burner as this club feels so much more stable than the nike sumo 5000 that I was hitting.  Certainly sounds 10x better! :D

So the question is, is it the shaft or is it the swing.  If the shaft flex was too weak you would be creating more hooks than blocked shots.

This is what I always thought as well.  The problem clearly lies with the Indian in this case, go figure.  While my last round was better, I'm still fighting the block.  After my last two tee shots Sunday, I do believe it is just a case of a rushed tempo and playing the ball too far forward in my stance.

Yesterday's round was much better, almost back to normal.  It's definitely not the shaft.

I dropped the ball back in my stance about 2 inches and have been striping it.  I was so close to reshafting.
